High-altitude vineyards in Valle d'Aosta
La Kiuva is a cooperative winery in Valle d'Aosta, known for its high-altitude vineyards and focus on indigenous grape varieties.
La Kiuva was established in the late 1970s and unites around 50 growers who tend steep vineyards located between 1,300 and 1,700 feet above sea level. The cooperative emphasizes the cultivation of indigenous grape varieties, particularly Picotendro, a local clone of Nebbiolo that thrives in the alpine climate.
The grapes are hand-harvested in mid-October and undergo traditional vinification methods. The wine is fermented at a controlled temperature of 85°F and aged for eight months, with one-third in wooden barrels and two-thirds in stainless steel tanks.
